Many people hide their true feelings because they fear being turned away by the object of their desire. Dating hurts sometimes so working through the avenue of online dating helps people operate with a decreased fear of being hurt. Individuals can browse the profile of other people without anyone else ever knowing unless they choose to make contact through chatting or messages on the site. If the other party is not interested they can simply say so or avoid the advances of the other person. While it still might smart a little, this kind of rejection is much more forgiving than a face to face blow to the ego.
